May 12, 2020. Day 57 of Covid-19. The natives are getting restless. Let’s hope stay at home time is almost done. Gumby and Pokey are on the farm today , trying to help with a small vegetable garden . They have checked the catalog and seeds have been ordered. Now they are turning the soil in a small patch on the lawn . Mr and Mrs Farmer have wisely decided not to interfere and see what the guys can do. Unfortunately Pokey has brought along his toy wind-up bull he bought in the antique shop. The bull has run crazily through all their hard work! Gumby is annoyed! Pokey says soothingly “ Gumby why don’t you have a look at the seeds we ordered and pick the ones you like best? I will put the bull in the pasture and fix this mess.” My goodness, I think Pokey may have learned how to be tactful and helpful! Everything goes smoothly after that and the garden looks perfect. “ Very satisfying” says Gumby. May 11, 2020. Day 56 of Covid-19 stay at home time . It’s not over yet folks! After rescuing the princess, Gumby and Pokey are invited to the castle for an afternoon tea reward party. Gumby is thrilled that the princess did have him sit next to her. They also met her two sisters but Gumby thought his princess was the most splendid one of them all. And the tea table!- muffins and scones, so yummy! Suddenly Gumby hears loud slurping and lapping noises! Looking at Pokey he whispers” What are you doing in that tea cup?” “ I wanted to get the last drop at the bottom “ says Pokey in a hollow voice, echoing out of the tea cup. “ Don’t do that! It’s rude!” ,hisses Gumby. The princess leans over, kisses Gumby on the cheek and says” Don’t be embarrassed! We don’t care as long as everyone has a good time!” Gumby is blushing and smiles and enjoys his tea. “That was lovely” says Gumby with a happy smile as they leave to go back to the Door. “What an exciting day! I think I am in love!” Pokey snickers and laughs in a horsey way but is really happy for his friend. Pokey has been finding that there are a lot of rules to think about. And in fact Gumby has broken one of Pokey’s rules- he has brought along a bottle of wine! Pokey grumbles” That’s just great! Now I am going to have to do all the rowing!” “ No“ says Gumby “ I plan on being a responsible drinker. Everything’s going to be fine! Relax and enjoy the fishing”. And so it was , Gumby was a responsible fellow and Pokey learned to sit quietly and not frighten the fish. They each caught one fish and released it back into the lake. And it was a lovely day for both of them. Pokey thinks it is a very strange place. “ Why would you want old stuff? “ he asks. “Well” says Gumby “ without old stuff, we wouldn’t have so many interesting places to go! But also lots of people like that these things have history and like to decorate with antiques. Also people like to collect things, like buttons or spoons. Don’t you collect something, Pokey?” “ Not yet” exclaims Pokey “ but I really like this wind up bull! May 7, 2020. Day 52 of Covid-19 stay at home, do you think it’s over yet time. What fun for Gumby and Pokey! They have met a lovely family of Potato Heads. There are five littles ones, playing in their club house and a big Daddy one making sure they are okay. Pokey is having a lot of fun with the little ones and the club house. “ They are so lucky to have this special place to play and to have each other to play with!” Everyone is having a great time until Pokey says” My favourite food in the whole world is French fries with Ketchup!” There is a sudden silence and sad faces amongst the Potato Heads. Daddy Potato Head says” I think it’s time you boys went home. We are going too.” As Pokey and Gumby walk sadly back to the Door, Pokey wonders “ Did I do something wrong?” Gumby tells him “ You know you need to be more tactful. Potato Heads don’t like talk about French fries. You wouldn’t like it if we said we loved horse meat sandwiches either” “Oh no” whispers Pokey and thinks to himself - I put my hoof in my mouth this time or maybe that was a two hoof mistake! Maybe the Amazon! “ Pokey is excited because he sees a monkey. “That monkey is so cute! I hope he starts swinging through the trees!” “ There are a lot of scary thins in the jungle too” says Gumby. “ Just look at the crocodile ! He’s going to eat the little frog!” “Yikes” screams Pokey “ And there’s one that’s going to eat us! Run to the Door!” Well that wasn’t very restful! But certainly exciting! There are certainly lots of tall buildings, and cars and noise” ponders Pokey. “ I think there are some clues.” says Gumby “ I see the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. I think we are in New York City!” “Wow” exclaims Pokey “ The Big Apple! I want to see Times Square and Central Park and a baseball game! Go Yankees!” Gumby is very excited” Oh I want to go to the Met, and the Guggenheim and to Broadway to see a play!” How will they do it all? So much to see and such different interests. There may have to be compromises! May 2, 2920. Day 47 of Covid -19 waiting it out time. Today Gumby and Pokey are visiting a farm on the Prairies. The boy who lives on the farm and all the animals have come out to say hello. Pokey starts to shake and cries” Look at those chickens! I don’t like chickens, they are mean and chase you!” Pokey looks like he is going to have a nervous breakdown. Gumby exclaims “ Well I don’t like the look of that sky. There’s going to be a storm, maybe even a tornado! May 1, 2020 Day 46 of Covid-19 waiting it out time. It’s the end of a long day of walking the Camino. Gumby and Pokey have walked 25 km and are exhausted. They have blisters and sore feet( 4 for Pokey!) Fortunately they have made friends and are resting beside the path , sharing a bottle of wine. Even Pokey has some. Gumby is so tired he is lying down, nearly fast asleep. Pokey has lots of questions. “ why do you carry those sticks? And who is the odd fellow on the horse with a jousting spear? “ The pilgrims patiently explain about walking sticks and Don Quixote, a very famous Spanish story. It’s been a hard day but very rewarding too. April30, 2020. Day 45 of Covid-19 waiting it out time. Well where are the guys today? It looks like they are on the Camino in northern Spain. They see see some pilgrims, a photo of monks or friars walking the Way and a map of the route. Pokey already has his scallop shell , the symbol of a pilgrim walking the Camino. Gumby is amazed” Do people really walk all that way? But why?” “ Yes “ says Pokey “ It’s about 800km . It can be walked for religious reasons or for a peaceful experience. Come on, let’s follow those pilgrims.” Gumby begins grumbling “ I can’t walk all that way, it’s too hard. Wait, I think that one pilgrim might have some wine! Will they share?” Pokey sighs” Pilgrims are very good about sharing” And off they go to try walking the Camino. How far will they travel? Will they have a spiritual experience? Will Gumby overindulge in the fruit of the vine? April 28, 2020. Day 44 of the Covid-19 waiting it out time. Somewhere in some big city, someone has been marking up alleys and buildings with his own style of graffiti. Gumby and Pokey are amazed! Paintings on old buildings and in alleyways! But Gumby and Pokey also like the art they are seeing. Gumby explains to Pokey that what the artist is doing is really illegal and rebellious. Pokey likes the rebel part and starts to draw his own. “Is that why the artist is wearing that hoody and hiding his face?” “Yes” answers Gumby” he has to careful because the police would like to arrest him!” Just for painting thinks Pokey! “I see the Police, Pokey”shouts Gumby “You’ve been defacing the sidewalk. We better leave quickly”. And away they go. April 27, 2020. Day 43 in Covid -19 waiting it out time. Gumby and Pokey are in the forest today. They are meeting a family of raccoons and are going to explore the forest with them . Hope they are up to some tree climbing because raccoons like to climb. Pokey notices that almost everything is in black and white. “What’s going on ?” Pokey wonders. “I seem to be having trouble seeing colour.” “ Oh” explains Gumby “ I asked the Door to do that. April 25, 2020. Day 41 of Covid-19 stay at home time. Today Gumby and Pokey are in one of the most magical places-the cottage! And they hope that soon all of you will be able to be there too! They are on the beach relaxing in the sun with a picnic too. Pokey sees seals and perhaps a shark in the water! Gumby says” Don’t worry, the shark won’t come out of the water and the seals won’t bother you. They just want some sun”. Pokey looks at Gumby and frowns. “ Did you bring all those bottles of wine just for you? “ “Don’t worry Pokey, I finished one so there’s only two big ones left!” Gumby prefers to stay flat on his towel for now, perhaps he needs to digest a bit first.
