June 30, 2020 Post Covid-19 time. Bini wanted to see active volcanoes. There are quite a few around the world regularly erupting or at least grumbling. Phillis uncomfortable. “ It’s hot here! And maybe dangerous!” “ I think it’s quiet right now .” says Bini. Maybe but still a chancy place to be. It is very interesting especially for science buffs. June 29, 2020. Post Covid-19 time-an imagining. Well it has been a lovely weekend. Phill has had a bit of a regression and has enjoyed beer and chips all weekend. He promises to smarten up starting today! They are all down by the river, enjoying the lovely summer weather and floating about in boats. It’s a dangerous place! “Look out, Bini!” cries Phill “That crocodile is going to attack!” “Yikes”screams Bini “What should we do?” “Run for the Door !” yells Phill. Away they go and Phill is silently thanking Bini for helping him give up the chips and beer and to exercise. Finally I am up and moving he thinks! And Bini -she is thinking about the animals. “I didn’t realize “ she muses, as the Door transports them home for the weekend,” that animals were violent too. I thought that was something humans do.” “But animals do it to eat and survive” Phill tells her “ It’s not the same thing at all!” So much to think about this week! June 25, 2020. Post Covid-19 time -an imagining. “Let’s go to the beach” pleads Bini. “There’s been so much going on I need a break!” Well Phill is not so keen on the beach. All that sand getting everywhere! But he agrees that they need a break. So off they go and of course Phill takes his chips and beer and some orange soda for Bini. Imagine their surprise when they discover they are at a nude beach! Bini is curious and asks” How come we look so different ? I can’t take my feathers off, I always look the same. “. “It’s okay” says Phill “ everyone is just different and it doesn’t matter. Inside is what matters. You are some kind of a bird but you are smart and fun and kind. That’s what is important.” “And what are you?” asks Bini. “Well, I guess I am sort of an eggplant” mumbles Phill. “A vegetable!” gasps Bini. “ Well it’s okay because you are kind too”. June 24, 2020. Post COVID-19 time- an imagining. Next stop Africa! “ This time” says Bini “ I want to see the animals in Africa. I hear there are problems here with sport killings and poaching! Lots of different animals are threatened.” “ This safari is really interesting” says Phill “ but it sure is hotter than the arctic!” . “ Soon we will stop for lunch. See the big lunch basket I am sitting on? Hey Phill where are your chips? Maybe that’s why you’re a bit grumpy.” “I am trying to cut back. You said I should!”says Phill sulking. Definitely a bit grumpy thinks Bini. Bini is asking the staff about the gun they are carrying. It’s only in case of animal attack she is told. Bini has decided after some research, that they should visit some of the endangered parts of the world. “ I would like to see what the problems are and also vanishing lifestyles” says Bini. “And because we travel by the Door magically , our carbon footprint is very small.” “ Okay” shivers Phill “ it’s quite cold here!” “But not as cold as usual” states Bini “ The arctic is warming up. I’ve been talking with this nice Inuit family and learning a lot. Like they live pretty much like everyone else but that hunting and traditional skills are still very important too.” Phill is a little nervous about the ride on the dog sled. Bini tells him “ just sit back and enjoy. It’s perfect for you in your shape!” Hmmm thinks Phill is she saying I am out of shape as in fat!! Phill is trying to sleep in a little but Rochman keeps waking him up for information. “ Come on “Rochman whispers “what really happened? Bini is in the shower, you can spill the beans now. I heard all about where you went but what else happened?!” “Oh “ mumbles Phill “ She doesn’t like bullfights, likes art, and train rides and boys of course..” “Boys?” Gasps Rochman “ I’m not ready for that!” Bini , just coming out of the shower exclaims” Oh you guys! Don’t be so silly! Some of the boys are kind of cute, that’s all! June 19, 2020. Post Covid-19 time- an imagining. Bini wants to try riding a horse and maybe meet some cowboys so the Door whisks them off to the mid west of America. “ Wow” exclaims Bini “ just like a movie! Now I will see if I can get on this pony! Are you coming Phill?” “ No “ says Phill” I don’t think my shape is meant for horse back riding. I will stay here by the fire with the cook. We can share the beer!” “Okay “replies Bini “ but that doesn’t sound like fun to me!” “Each to his own” says Phill “ be careful of those really big cows!” “Those are steers” calls out Bini as she rides away with the cowboys. June 18, 2020. Post Covid-19 times-an imagining. After the bullfight yesterday, Bini wasn’t sure she cared much fo Spain. Today Phill has taken her further north and she is amazed all she sees. “What’s happening over there with those guys riding horses with spears again?” “Okay “explains Phill” First of all that’s a lance not a spear because Don Quixote thinks he’s a knight and he’s jousting.” “With a windmill?! Is he crazy?”wonders Bini. So Phill explains that Don Quixote ( real name Alonso ) has read a lot of books about romance and knights and chivalry and went a little mad and thought he was going to rescue damsels and fix the world. “Wow” says Bini “ I read a lot, hope I don’t go crazy too. June 17, 2020. Post Covid-19 time - an imagining. The Door has taken Bini and Phill to Spain for a bull fight! Before it starts ,Bini says “ I’ve been reading some Hemingway. I read that bull fights are very exciting but not very nice for the bull I think!” “ Well” says Phill “ I think you will have to judge for yourself. All part of learning..” Bini interrupts “ Look it’s beginning!” The matador has come out with his red cape from one side of the arena and the bull is coming out from the other side. The bull looks unsure and then there are two horsemen with spears giving him pokes to get him moving. There are a couple of passes by the matadors red cape and then the tired, hurt bull collapses on the sand. “ Oh no” screams Bini “ I can’t watch!” and turns her head away. After Bini says “ I’ve decided that’s too violent for me and should not be allowed!” “Yes” says Phill “ I agree with you. But the hard part is convincing others who think it matters to them, because it’s part of their background or whatever. “ Well Bini didn’t enjoy today’s visit to Spain. June 12, 2020. Post Covid-19 time- an imagining. Today Bini and Phill have done all of Venice! St. Marks Square, the Cathedral, the museums and art galleries and looked at the shops. Now they are having a gondola ride. The Philosopher has a guide book and is reading out all about the sites they are passing- the history, what famous people lived there a long time ago, who painted the view and etc. Bini wishes just a little that Phill would stop and enjoy the moment. She says dreamily “ Do you think our gondolier is going to sing ? I hear they do sometimes, it’s very romantic!” The Philosopher stops talking and looks at the Apprentice and wonders if the boy thing was becoming a ‘thing’. He hoped not, he wasn’t ready for that. Might need to go back to drinking beer! June 11, 2020 Post Covid-19 time - an imagining. Yesterday at the Kroller-Muller Museum was wonderful! They saw all the Van Gogh, they walked in the garden to see the sculptures, had lunch on the lawn and so much more. When they got back to the Door they were whisked away to Venice! It was late and they were tired and so they slept in this morning, had a nice breakfast on the balcony and are now leisurely floating along the canal. The Philosopher says a bit shyly to the Apprentice “You we’re right you know, I did enjoy the day more with less beer. And today I don’t have a headache” “Good” says the Apprentice, who refrains from saying I told you so or something like that “Let’s see what fun we can have today!” Just then the bells around the city began to ring out. June 10, 2020 Post Covid -19 time - an imagining. The Apprentice enjoyed the Van Gogh so much they have taken a trip to Amsterdam. The Door got them easily to the city but the museum they want to go to is a train ride away in Otterlo. It is called the Kroller-Muller Museum and Bini is very excited! The Philosopher, if we tell the truth, is feeling a little green. Bini has ordered coffee and is carefully suggesting that Phill might enjoy the journey more if he eased up on the beer. “ You are missing so much!” She exclaims “And as a philosopher you should be able to reason this out and come to a good conclusion!” Phill sips his coffee and thinks the Apprentice is getting too big for her boots! But maybe a little wiser too! Well maybe he will try harder but he is not giving up his chips! Out side the train window the trees and flowers are a blur as the high speed train speeds them to their destination. June 9, 2020. Post Covid-19 time - an imagining . After seeing all the wonderful art in Paris museums, Bini decides it would be a good idea to have an art lesson. “ I think my favourite is Van Goth” she tells the Professor . “ You were highly recommended as an art professor by some fellows I know “ Bini continues. Oh no thinks the professor I hope this isn’t going to be like that incident with the horse and the green guy! The lesson begins and after a while they hear some giggling and hiccups. Glancing at the Philosopher, Bini realizes that Phill never should have had 3 beers at lunch. Now he is snoring lightly. The professor looks annoyed but Bini says “ Never mind. I am the one who really wants the lesson!” Afterwards the professor suggests a trip to Amsterdam to see more Van Goth masterpieces. June 8, 2020. Post Covid-19 time - an imagining. Well what a day it has been! Bini chose to go to Paris on her first excursion out into the world. The first big surprise was that crummy old Door that hid the facilities at home. It was magical! If you used the Door properly , it would take you anywhere- even through time! In Paris , she finally saw some of her favourite paintings- a Monet, Gauguin and Van Goth! “So much better than pictures in books!” she exclaimed. Now they are seated at a cafe near the river Seine , having a glass of wine for Phill and orange squash for Bini( she is not sure she likes it. Very bubbly!) phill has his bag of chips too. He had to leave the bag in a coat check while they visited museums. Which he didn’t like! Phill is very happy they went to Paris, the home country of Descartes and Rousseau his favourite philosophers. Bini says” Our waitress is very chic , don’t you think Phill?” Phill has his mouth full of chips and just mumbles. June 5, 2020 Post Covid time, still self-isolating- an imagining. This morning the Apprentice (Bini) was woken by loud whispers. It sounded like an argument! Peering around carefully, she noticed that Philosopher Phill was not in his bed and turning her head( which is quite easy when you are an owl like creature) she saw Phill and Rochman sitting back by the facilities. Rochman was saying “ you must do this! It’s time to push the chicklet out of the nest!” And Phill was, it must be said,whining “ But she’s so young! And even worse I would have to go too!” Well Bini realizes they’re are talking about her and decides she wants in on the conversation. “Where, what, when and why?” Bini exclaims. “That’s done it!” Phill glares at Rochman but that just bounces off his hard exterior. “Okay” says Phill “ the next part of your education is to introduce you to the rest of the world. I can’t promise anything nice. In fact it may be awful!” “Good” yells Bini “ I was getting bored here. Where?” “Perhaps you want to consult your books and atlas and choose yourself “ suggests Rochman. “Alright “ mutters the Philosopher “ but I get refusal rights” . so where will they go? Bini the Apprentice has a lot to think about. June 4,2020 After the Covid time-an imagining. The Philosopher, the Apprentice and Rochman have come out to the river which runs by close to their home. The Philosopher has made a trip to the town for supplies( mostly beer and chips) and is cooling his feet in the river. He keeps muttering about crowds and rude people. Next time he thinks I must remember my mask! The Apprentice has her head buried in a favourite book and doesn’t really hear what he is saying. Also Phill often mutters away about stuff about “ out there” and “the past”. She has never gone to town and so doesn’t miss it. Rochman is further along the river bank, humming away to himself. It sounds something like” she needs to go, time to go” but all murmured together. Post Covid Time with the Philosopher and the Apprentice. Today the Apprentice is perplexed. The Philosopher has been working hard all morning , building what he calls, “ The Facilities!” He calls it a civilizing influence and education for the Apprentice. The Apprentice doesn’t get it- the woods have been fine for a long time and the River is close by for washing. A bit cold in the winter it’s true, but they have been self isolating for a long time and so has everyone else - so no need to be modest. Well the Philosopher kept on muttering about the Apprentice needing to know how to behave when she got out in the world and the Apprentice kept thinking that she thought the rest of the world was boring and empty. At least that’s what she had always been told. When she inquired about privacy in the house, the Philosopher said” oh we can roll the old Door in front, finally it has a purpose.
